Deep Water Regeneration

Our industry partner Graham’s secured the deep water regeneration project from clients Teessworks, to provide the first phase in an extensive regeneration program of the docklands in the Teesside, Middlesbrough area.

Trench Control were successfully appointed the piling package which included AZ sheet pile anchor wall and PU infill sheets to the front combi-wall as well as the placing and stressing of the anchor ties for the proposed new berthing platform.

ANCHOR WALL

AZ 28-700 & AZ 42-700 installed using TCL ABI 16/20 into pre-augured pile line. Sheets refused high therefore were required to be impacted to depth using CX110 impact hammer once the full anchor wall line was fully pitched.

COMBI-WALL INFILL SHEETS

3No PU22 sheet piles were to be installed between the large diameter king pile tubes. Sheets were installed using a small ground gate, crane mounted vibro hammer and a pencil impact hammer so that the finished toe depth could be achieved.

ANCHOR TIES

Installed 166No tensioned anchor ties which joined the front wall combi to the rear anchor wall. These anchor ties were pre-stressed to take out the slack before being backfilled on the platform. They received up to 4 additional passes with a torquing jack to achieve the required stress loadings.

Combi-Wall Installation

Berth Combi Wall Installation
Montrose Harbour, Angus, Scotland, UK

Farrans were the preferred contractor for berths 7&8 on the north side harbour. The existing berths were extremely dilapidated to a state that significant point loads were no longer deemed safe.

Trench Control partnered with Farrans to install a new combi-wall running the length of the 2 existing berths incorporating tie back anchor wall and decking piles to form a structural stable berth where ships could dock. The project was to split into 2 phases starting with phase one to install 72No anchor tubes, 34No combi wall tubes with 33No infill AZ sheets and 2 return AZ sheet pile wing walls.

DESIGN & FABRICATION

Our in-house design team got work on designing and fabricating a hydraulic gate that would allow tubes and sheets to be installed up to 10m away from the pile line held by the hitch of a 32t excavator.

INSTALLATION

After tube No1 was installed the gate was then hydraulically plumbed for the next tube by holding the previous one, giving stability to the frame for setting up the next.

FINISHED PRODUCT

When all 32No tubes had been driven through the gate and impacted to set TCL installed 20m AZsheet piles between the tubes to formation level.

Strategic Land Development

Trench Control worked alongside our partners Farrans and clients Northumberland Energy Park to transform an existing dock into a deep water berth with jack up barge capabilities and is part of a strategic land development plan for the Blyth estuary.

COMBI-WALL INSTALLATION

These combi tubes were pitched into position using Trench Controls ALPS system (Auto Levelling Piling System) which allows extremely accurate installation of tubular piles without the need for labour intensive ground gates giving our client fast and accurate installation.

ANCHOR PILES

The anchor tubes were installed using TCL leader piling rig and were vibrated to refusal from the crane platform. Once all the tubes had been installed to vibro refusal they required to be impacted to depth using 90t crawler crane & CX110 impact hammer.

BARGE WORKS

TCL designed a demountable top and bottom piling gate for the barge so that sheets could be held in position and kept vertical whilst the tides raised and lowered by rollers.

Flood Defence Works

Mode Wheel Flood Defence Works

Trench Control partnered with McLaughlin & Harvey for Manchester District Council to install ground stabilization works along the canal side in Manchester’s Mode Wheel. Adjoining land owned by Valero has large petrochemical tanks which were monitored for movement due to the underscoring of the river bank.

Trench Control were appointed specialist piling sub-contractor to install new combi wall running parallel to the existing river bank and assist in the stabilization of the existing bank.

INSTALLATION

The combi wall consisted of 47No 965mm diameter steel tubes and 79No PU-sheet piles driven 1 tube to 2 sheets consecutively. Sheets and tubes were to vibro driven to set on rock then impacted to refusal through a temporary ground gate fixed to an existing dead-man wall on landside.

PILING GATES

The gates provide a stable guide to pitch the sheets and tubes accurately into place so they can vibrated into set and impacted to refusal. A second Jackup barge was then brought into position so that the tube can be rotary cored into the rock, socketed and backfilled with concrete.

FINISHED PRODUCT

47No tubes & 79No sheet piles fitted within the 7 week programme which allowed drilling & coring to start after 4 weeks of installation. Piles were within tolerance and vertical alignment specified and sufficiently impacted into the rock below.
